Re Critical thinking I believe you must be pretty confident in one’s own abilities to be able to think critically and accept the results. I work as a nurse and I know I don’t think critically enough partly because that takes a lot of knowledge and personal confidence.
Quentin, here is a marvellous quote by Thomas Merton
” ..Who will tell these people that they are walking shining like the sun..?”
I have seen lots of inward looking squabbling on this site but little that addresses the true nature of the churches mission…perhaps such a topic might be overdue?
PS should read “walking round shining like the sun”
“….the true nature of the Church’s mission” is quite a wide ranging topic which I am unqualified to address. This I will say: Jesus Christ who said, He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, established his Church, Peter was assigned to look after it. We have had many successors of Peter, currently Pope Benedict XVI – the choice of the Holy Spirit.
Vatican II succeeded greatly in the creation of disenchantment and “squabbling” at all levels; and the fundamental reason – as I see it – is the break with Tradition. Finally, if you wish to witness what the Catholic Church used to be, please visit a service of the Society of Pius X. You will soon see the difference between the ‘boogie woogie’ church and Tradition.
A good point, here.
Stephen
I am interested in your remarks about the responsibilties of Diocesan Bishops and I would like to point out that no Bishop has to work within the ‘framework of collegiality’ as you seem to suggest although this is a common mistake. When we saw H.E. Cardinal Stickler in Rome in1997, he stressed that since the Council, Collegiality has been misinterpreted.. The truth is that each diocesan Bishop ihas, and always has had, the solemn duty of ensuring the Religious Instruction of the Catholic children in his diocesan schools.is absolutely sound and fully comprehensive..No Diocesan Bishop can .escape this responsibility.
Cardinal Stickler was an amiable and gentle person, but I rememebr that on this important issue he felt so strongly that he banged the table to emphasise his point.
So if Catholic children in any diocese are leaving their Catholic schools with the “widespread relgious ignorance” Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI ) so deplored, it is the Diocesan Bishop who will have to answer for it..
Dear Quentin,
Please, thank you so much for your thoughtful and educative articles in the Catholic Herald. They are really worth reading. I found this very meaningful: It’s time to champion marriage, David. Keep it up.
God bless,
Fr. David Ssenkaayi
